Our History

Miscarriage of Justice Canada was created in direct response to the federal government's commitment to create an independent Miscarriage of Justice Review Commission

Board of Directors: Dr. Gary Botting, Chair, BC; Dr. Myles McLellan, Executive Director, ON; Paul Briggs, BC; Greg Rodin, AB; Peter Copple, AB; Stefan Horodeckyj, ON; Michel Gagnon, QC.

Miscarriage of Justice Canada (MJC) was federally incorporated in January 2025, following the enactment of the Miscarriage of Justice Act on December 17, 2024, which established the nation’s first independent Miscarriage of Justice Review Commission (MJRC). The creation of MJC marked a significant step toward strengthening Canada’s commitment to fairness and accountability in the criminal justice system. Established to provide dedicated advocacy for individuals with credible claims of wrongful conviction, MJC serves as a national resource for those seeking exoneration and restoration of their rights and dignity.

Since its inception, MJC has developed a comprehensive framework for case intake, investigation, and application preparation, supported by a growing network of legal professionals, academic institutions, and community partners. The organization’s work emphasizes accessibility and equity, with a focus on assisting marginalized and underrepresented individuals disproportionately affected by systemic injustices.

Today, MJC continues to expand its operations across Canada—conducting legal and forensic research, submitting applications for review before the MJRC, and advancing public understanding of wrongful convictions. Through these efforts, MJC stands as a national voice for truth, fairness, and the pursuit of justice for all.

Why Us

At Miscarriage of Justice Canada, we combine legal expertise, investigative precision, and compassion to uncover the truth.

Our multidisciplinary team of lawyers, investigators, and academic partners brings decades of experience in wrongful conviction advocacy. Unlike organizations limited by case type or scope, we accept both homicide and non-homicide convictions where credible evidence suggests a miscarriage of justice.

We prioritize timely, transparent communication and client-centered advocacy, ensuring every applicant is heard and supported.

Our national reach and collaborative partnerships with universities, legal clinics, and community organizations strengthen each case we take on—giving every client the best possible path toward exoneration and restoration of dignity.
